Focus On What Brings Me Joy – New Years Resolution
by Tony Yost
Yes, I know it’s a bit early to start on New Year’s resolutions, but I read something on Stacy Kamala Waltman’s blog that really got me to thinking…
She said “…remove all traces of those things which are not bringing you joy. Remove all of their energy from your current existence.”
This is some of the best advice I’ve heard in a long time. Why spend any time at all on things that do not contribute to your happiness?
Putting it another way, Ed Foreman says in one of his sessions that a lot of people go around saying “Oh, I got to do this, and I got to do that…” He says “You don’t got to do nothin’ !”.
A hand comes up in the back of the room. “What about taxes?”. Ok, I admit that, on the surface, some things do not appear to be joyful. In those cases, you can decide to focus on the positive aspects. I hate filling out all of those tax forms…so I hire someone to do that. They are better at it than I am, and I eliminate a part that I don’t enjoy. Once they’re done, I am confident they are done correctly, and that feels good. And let’s not forget that the streets we drive on, the schools our children attend, etc all come from these taxes.
Another hand…”What about work?”. Again, focus on the parts that you do like. There are people that I enjoy being around, they pay me, I get paid time off, I get satisfaction from doing a job well…etc.
As Stacy said, let’s remove all energy from the things that don’t bring us joy.
I think that one resolution might be the only one I need this year.
